
TOPIC ONE: Meaning of Nutrition
In recent years, there has been a large
increase in people in the community in recognizing nutritional issues, this
increase has emerged especially after the outbreak of COVID 19. In Tanzania,
for example, many behaviors are associated with nutrition with the aim of
protecting themselves or increasing body's defenses against this dangerous
disease. For example, it arose with habits like eating ginger and using lemons
to increase the body's immunity. Thus making a large group of people realize
that nutrition is an important weapon to protect against various diseases.
Historically, nutrition did not start in
this recent period, nutrition existed from the ancient times of Egypt, Greece
and Rome who realized that nutrition was important for health. Various
philosophers advised the use of fruits, vegetables and grains which in today's
world we recognize as foods rich in nutrients.
A Roman philosopher known as Galen, he was able to go further until he developed a theory of nutrition, believing that food is important in maintaining health and preventing diseases.
It is important to understand the interplay between nutrition and our societies right now. To enable us to take care of nutrition, first we understand the meaning of the word nutrition itself. There have been different meanings of the word nutrition, here are some of those meanings.
Nutrition - is a process that involves various stages of how the body uses the food eaten. These steps are how food is eaten, absorbed and used in the body.
The Oxford Dictionary defined nutrition as the process of obtaining food necessary for health and growth.
In another sense of Nutrition is the science of food, nutrients and other things contained in food, how they work, how they interact and their balance, to relate to health and diseases.
Each one has his own words, but they all say that nutrition starts from the food that is found in the body until it is used. So nutrition is not just one act of eating food as many think. Nutrition is a combination of actions starting from how food is obtained (including preparation), how it is eaten, how it is absorbed and used in the body.
